Framed Bed-Sized Tatami Mats
Our framed tatami mats are made to complement our Japanese futons. They sit directly on the floor as a firm, natural base for sleeping, meditation or floor seating. The fitted wooden edging is purely functional: it protects the edges of the mat, hides the side stitching, and locks multiple mats securely in place for larger sizes.
Construction
These are genuine Japanese tatami mats, built for comfort and longevity. They are quality everyday mats, made for regular use in Australian homes, rather than the top-grade specialist mats that sell for very high prices in Japan.
- Foundation: The 5cm thick tatami mats provide a firm, supportive surface for sleeping or sitting directly on the floor.
- Materials: Woven igusa rush grass gives the mats a natural, clean scent and helps absorb and regulate humidity in a room.
- Underside: The underside of each mat is lined with igusa off-cuts, or igusa not suitable for the top surface, instead of a synthetic backing, which reduces the amount of plastic in the mat. This eco-friendly construction gives the underside a rough, natural finish, which is normal for traditional tatami.
- Frame size: The wooden frame is 5cm high and deep all the way around, with a rounded bevel on the top outside edge.
- Versatility: While designed for use directly on the floor, the framed Queen and King sizes match Australian standard bedding dimensions. This makes them the only sizes that can be retrofitted onto an existing Australian Queen or King bed base, for customers who prefer to stay off the floor.
