Framed Pair Tatami Set (Two Mats)
Our Framed Pair Set is a compact, square layout made from two mats, suited to a small, defined gathering space in your home. It works well for:
- Square dining: A small, traditional square dining area with a low table.
- Kotatsu: A square kotatsu setting with cushions or zaisu (floor chairs).
Not for sleeping: For a futon we recommend a framed set of at least three mats. See our Framed Three-Mat Set.
Construction and Options
These are genuine Japanese tatami mats, built for durability and comfort. They are quality everyday mats, made for regular use in Australian homes, rather than the top-grade specialist mats that sell for very high prices in Japan.
- Surface: The igusa rush grass surface gives the mat its natural aroma and a firm, supportive texture.
- Core: The 5cm thick tatami core insulates, keeping the room cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
- Underside: The underside of each mat is lined with igusa off-cuts, or igusa not suitable for the top surface, instead of a synthetic backing, which reduces the amount of plastic in the mat. This eco-friendly construction gives the underside a rough, natural finish, which is normal for traditional tatami.
- Humidity: Tatami is known for its ability to naturally absorb and regulate humidity in a room.
- Frame: The wooden frame finishes the edges, conceals the stitching and locks the mats firmly together so they can't shift. It is 5cm high and deep all the way around, with a rounded bevel on the top outside edge.
Options
- Trim: Black, blue brocade, green and blue brocade or brown brocade.
- Frame colour: Natural or walnut brown.
The Japanache Difference
Japanache is a Japanese-Australian family business. We import our tatami from Kumamoto and our futons from Shikoku, and we have been importing from Japan since 2005. Read our story here. Based on the Gold Coast, we offer expert advice on creating a complete, authentic, Japanese-inspired space.
