Framed Three-Mat Tatami Set

Our Framed Three-Mat Set is a popular configuration that creates a dedicated, multi-purpose area within a larger room. The wide, stable layout suits a range of uses:

Dining and living: A low-level dining setting with a table (such as a kotatsu), cushions and/or zaisu (floor chairs).
Sleeping: A natural, supportive base for one of our Japanese futons. This is the minimum setup we recommend for using standard mats under a futon.

Construction and Options

These are genuine Japanese tatami mats, built for durability and comfort. They are quality everyday mats, made for regular use in Australian homes, rather than the top-grade specialist mats that sell for very high prices in Japan.

Surface: The igusa rush grass surface gives the mat its natural aroma and a firm, supportive texture.
Core: The thick tatami core insulates, keeping the room cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
Underside: The underside of each mat is lined with igusa off-cuts, or igusa not suitable for the top surface, instead of a synthetic backing, which reduces the amount of plastic in the mat. This eco-friendly construction gives the underside a rough, natural finish, which is normal for traditional tatami.
Humidity: Tatami is known for its ability to naturally absorb and regulate humidity in a room.
Frame: The wooden frame finishes the edges, conceals the stitching and locks the mats firmly together so they can't shift.It's 5cm high and deep all the way around, with a rounded bevel on the top outside edge.

Trim: Black, blue brocade, green and blue brocade or brown brocade.
Frame colour: Natural or walnut brown.
