Teahouse 4½ Mat (Yojōhan) Tatami Set

Create an authentic Japanese tea room (chashitsu) at home with our Teahouse 4½ mat (Yojōhan) tatami set. The Yojōhan is the classic, intimate tea room layout, well suited to tea ceremony, meditation or a dedicated minimalist living space.

Flexible Installation and Design

This set is available in two installation styles:

Unframed set: Designed for installation directly against walls or existing flooring for a flush, integrated finish.
Framed set: The low-profile wooden edging protects the mat borders, hides the stitching, and locks the mats firmly into a single, defined unit. Available in a natural or walnut finish.

You can choose from all four of our trims to suit your interior colour palette.

Construction

These are genuine Japanese tatami mats, built for durability and comfort. They are quality everyday mats, made for regular use in Australian homes, rather than the top-grade specialist mats that sell for very high prices in Japan.

Surface: The igusa rush grass surface gives the mat its natural aroma and a firm, supportive texture.
Core: The thick tatami core insulates, keeping the room cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
Underside: The underside of each mat is lined with igusa off-cuts, or igusa not suitable for the top surface, instead of a synthetic backing, which reduces the amount of plastic in the mat. This eco-friendly construction gives the underside a rough, natural finish, which is normal for traditional tatami.
Humidity: Tatami is known for its ability to naturally absorb and regulate humidity in a room.
Frame size: The frame is 5cm high and deep all the way around, with a rounded bevel on the top outside edge.

Using the Set With a Futon

A 4½ mat set is large enough to use as a base for a futon. For this we recommend the framed set, or fitting the mats into a recessed floor cavity, so they can't shift.
