Rodatami (Tea Ceremony Mat)
Our Rodatami (or Ro Tatami) is the specialised mat for creating a tea ceremony room (chashitsu) in your home. It has a precise cut-out for the ro (sunken hearth) used in the traditional winter tea ceremony. It is the key mat in the 4½ mat Yojōhan layout, providing a dedicated place for the tea master to prepare and serve the tea.
Construction and Options
These are genuine Japanese tatami mats, built for tradition and durability. They are quality everyday mats, rather than the top-grade specialist mats that sell for very high prices in Japan.
- Surface: The igusa rush grass surface gives the mat its natural aroma and a firm, supportive texture.
- Core: The 5cm thick tatami core insulates, keeping the room cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
- Underside: The underside of each mat is lined with igusa off-cuts, or igusa not suitable for the top surface, instead of a synthetic backing, which reduces the amount of plastic in the mat. This eco-friendly construction gives the underside a rough, natural finish, which is normal for traditional tatami.
- Humidity: Tatami is known for its ability to naturally absorb and regulate humidity in a room.

- Trim: The Rodatami is usually available immediately in plain black trim. Other trims, including our brocade options, can be ordered in our next shipment to match your décor.
- Custom cuts: We can arrange the corner cut on either side of the mat, or supply a full mat with a corner cut, to suit different tea ceremony schools and room layouts.
