Blue Brocade Tatami Mat
This tatami mat has a navy blue brocade trim (Heri), woven in a traditional diamond or lattice pattern in light blue, gold and red. It works well as an accent mat for displaying ceramics, bonsai or other Japanese antiques. This pattern is only stocked in our standard size mats.
Construction
These are genuine Japanese tatami mats, built for durability and comfort. They are quality everyday mats, made for regular use in Australian homes, rather than the top-grade specialist mats that sell for very high prices in Japan.
- Surface: The top layer (Omote) is woven from igusa rush grass, which gives the mat its clean scent and firm texture.
- Core: The 5cm core (Toko) insulates, keeping the room cooler in summer and warmer in winter, and gives a firm, supportive surface for floor seating and yoga.
- Underside: The underside of each mat is lined with igusa off-cuts, or igusa not suitable for the top surface, instead of a synthetic backing, which reduces the amount of plastic in the mat. This eco-friendly construction gives the underside a rough, natural finish, which is normal for traditional tatami.
- Humidity: Tatami is known for its ability to naturally absorb and regulate humidity in a room.
Using Tatami With a Futon
If you would like to sleep on a futon over tatami, our bed-sized mats are made to complement our Japanese futons. Our standard mats are not suitable as a base for a futon on their own. If you choose standard mats for this, we recommend a framed setup of at least three mats. Larger setups also work well, such as our 4½ mat tea house layouts.
