This mat features a distinguished, traditional brown brocade trim (Heri), intricately woven with patterns in gold, red and green. This stunning, multi-coloured design provides a luxurious contrast to the natural rush surface, making it an ideal accent mat for any room or a perfect base for displaying other Japanese antiques. This trim is available in both our standard mats and our bed-sized mats.

Quality Construction for Australian Living

We specialise in genuine Japanese products and high-quality traditional items, and these tatami mats are built for durability and comfort. They are quality everyday mats, made for regular use in Australian homes, rather than the top-grade specialist mats that sell for very high prices in Japan.

Surface: The visible top layer (Omote) is traditionally woven from igusa rush grass, providing that unique, clean scent and textured grip.
Core: At a substantial 5cm thickness, the core (Toko) offers superior insulation, helping to keep your space cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
Underside: The underside of each mat is lined with igusa off-cuts, or igusa not suitable for the top surface, instead of a synthetic backing, which reduces the amount of plastic in the mat. This eco-friendly version gives the underside a rough, natural finish, which is normal for traditional tatami.
Humidity: Tatami is known for its ability to naturally absorb and regulate humidity in a room.

Using Tatami With a Futon

If you would like to sleep on a futon over tatami, our bed-sized mats are made to complement our Japanese futons. Our standard mats are not suitable as a base for a futon on their own. If you choose standard mats for this, we recommend a framed setup of at least three mats. Larger setups also work well, such as our 4½ mat tea house layouts.
