Custom-Made Tatami Mats

We make tatami mats in any shape you need, for awkward corners, alcoves, curved walls and non-standard room layouts. Each piece can be up to 2.2m long and 1m wide, and larger shapes are made from several pieces. For example, we have supplied a large circle made up of five pieces. Custom mats use the same materials and construction as our standard mats.

Construction

These are genuine Japanese tatami mats, built for durability and comfort. They are quality everyday mats, made for regular use in Australian homes, rather than the top-grade specialist mats that sell for very high prices in Japan.

  • Surface: The igusa rush grass surface gives the mat its natural aroma and a firm, supportive texture.
  • Core: The thick tatami core insulates, keeping the room cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
  • Underside: The underside of each mat is lined with igusa off-cuts, or igusa not suitable for the top surface, instead of a synthetic backing, which reduces the amount of plastic in the mat. This eco-friendly construction gives the underside a rough, natural finish, which is normal for traditional tatami.
  • Humidity: Tatami is known for its ability to naturally absorb and regulate humidity in a room.

Ordering

  • Trim: All of our trim options are available.
  • Payment: Because each mat is made to your measurements, custom-made mats are only available if paid for in full when the order is placed.
  • Returns: Custom-made mats can't be returned.
  • Lead time: Custom mats are made to order and shipped with our next container from Japan. Air freight is available for a faster delivery but costs considerably more.
